Great Oak Beauty
Hypomecis roboraria

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775) 1943 / 70.267

An uncommon and local resident, especially in the Wyre Forest.

A species of large old oak woods.

Overwinters as a larva, adults are attracted to light.

Note This is a large moth so size should help to distinguish it from similar species. The two cross-lines are noticeably thickened where they converge at the wing edge, forming a sort of dark smudge. Try and photograph the underside of the forewing as well (easily done if in a glass tube) where this moth has a pale square area at the tip of the forewing surrounded by blacker shading. The antennae in the male are more pectinate than the smaller similar looking Willow Beauty. See underwing features under that species.

Retained Specimen / Photograph will be Required.

Recorded in 15 (11%) of 140 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1834.
Last Recorded in 2022.
