Micropterigidae

5 species. Wingspan 7-9mm.

Very small purple and gold moths which are unique amongst the Lepidoptera in possessing functional mandibles. Day flying and feeding on pollen. Little is known of their early stages but larvae have been found in soil feeding externally possibly on shoots, rootlets, fungal hyphae or detritus.
