A species of heathland but also gardens and woodland.

Larvae live in a web on the foodplant from July to May. Adults often rest during the day and have a liking for burnt twigs. They come readily to light.

Note similar to Ortholepis betulae but that species has a scale tuft preceding the first cross-line.
