An uncommon species in the south and east that is spreading nortwards.

A species of reed-beds, fens, marshes, riverbanks, margins of lakes and ponds - all places where Common Reed flourishes.

Overwinters as a fully-grown larva in a reed stem and adults come to light and to sugar.

Note Smoky and Common Wainscots lack the terminal row of small black dots on the forewing. Unlike Common and Smoky the central vein is white for its entire length and comes to a white point. Those two species also have a small central dot which Obscure lacks.
