A common but local resident.

Typically a species of moorland and heathland.

The males can be seen dashing over heather in sunshine, looking for the females that emit a pheromone. A recent pheromone lure has proved very effective in attracting males; sometimes in large numbers.

Overwinters as a pupa, sometimes over several winters.

Recorded in 61 (44%) of 140 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1834.
